ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, A VERY IMPORTANT EVENT TOOK PLACE IN BAKU
"One hundred years ago, a very important event took place in Baku. For the first time, the First Turkological Congress was held, and the decisions of this congress played a crucial role in the future destiny of the Turkic peoples."
This was stated by the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union, People’s Writer Anar, in the new edition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress.
He noted that the positive aspect of this congress was the transition to the Latin alphabet:
"At that time, it was believed that the Latin alphabet was more convenient than the Arabic script. The Turkic peoples, including Türkiye, switched to the Latin alphabet. Later, by Stalin’s order, they were forced to adopt the Cyrillic alphabet. After our countries gained independence, we once again returned to the Latin alphabet."
The People’s Writer also regretfully mentioned that the majority of the congress’s delegates later became victims of repression.
