THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TURKOLOGY CONGRESS IS ALREADY MANIFESTING ITSELF
“In the 1920s, intellectuals began searching for ways to unite the Turkic peoples, and in 1926 the First Turkology Congress was held. What is remarkable is that the Bolshevik dictatorship allowed this to happen.”
These remarks were made by academician Teymur Kərimli, Director of the Institute of Manuscripts, in the latest episode of the project dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Turkology Congress, jointly produced by the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation and Baku TV. He added that the reason permission was granted for the First Turkology Congress was the plan to later eliminate those who participated in it.
“One hundred years ago, the Turkic peoples were not as strong as they are today. Now the leaders of Turkic states have grown so close to one another that the significance of the Turkology Congress is already becoming evident. Although the participants of the Congress were subjected to repression, their legacy has endured,” the academician emphasized.
